Week 8- Cartoonist's Track: Representation

In this specific case, I went for likenesses more than showing ethnicity. Obviously, this is an autobiographical piece, so I am biased towards seeing these people's individual traits more than their ethnic traits. I was more interested in capturing each person's energy and personality. Also, in this specific case, I am portraying a white man and two people who are mixed with white, so they are going to share some common features.

    Good comic. It had a very authentic style, sort of underground influence, I love the thinker panel.

The main aspects of Robert Crumb's cartooning that I emulated were his layouts and his use of hatching. Crumb's art makes extensive use of hatching and cross hatching, and I used some in this comic. Also, his layouts are usually simple and grid-like, sometimes using many panels per page. Therefore, aside from the first and final panels, I used many equally sized panels side by side.  As far as the content itself, I wanted to parody a lot of Male cartoonists' attitude toward women and minorities, so I did a very unsubtle parody. I wanted to emulate the crass nature of the movement while criticizing certain aspects of it.

Week 5- The Emergence of the Graphic Novel- Cartoonist's Track

One of the primary techniques I appropriated from Eisner in this page was the openness of his pages. I remember reading a quote somehwere (it may have been in Understanding Comics ) from Eisner saying he wanted to escape the confines of the panel, and I found that interesting. This is very evident in his Contract With God trilogy. Many of his pages don't even have traditional panels, instead opting to have images without borders. Eisner didn't feel the need to fill up the whole page if it wasn't necessary, and this sometimes results in his pages feeling almost like illustrations for a novel. This is especially true when he has narration and no speech balloons on a page (something else I emulated here). I also wanted to incorporate his art style. Week 1-The Arrival

The Arrival by Shaun Tan is a masterclass in how to tell a story without using any words. In the comic, Tan uses simple yet effective panel layouts to make the actions easy to read. Tan frequently uses 9-12 panel grids so he can show many important images at once, making it easier for the reader to see what is happening in any given moment. When Tan wants to convey that an image or idea is important, he will either use a full page spread or a double page spread. In addition to the page layouts, Tan’s clean and realistic art makes it very easy for the reader to understand what is happening. Every character is expressive without being too stylized, grounding the art in a way that makes it more readable without the necessity of words. Tan’s detailed rendering makes it easy to tell when a character is in a new place or when it’s a certain time of day, even with (or partly because of) the limited color palette.
